"If you're ultimately helping students become creative individuals with a voice; fluent, context-aware experts with language; and engaged and thinking adults, we think you're doing your job as a writing teacher (above and beyond what the standards-of-the-week have to say on the matter)."
-Dawn Latta Kirby and Darren Crovitz
"To teach writing well, we don't look someplace 'out there' for rules, formulas, and mimicry," write Dawn Latta Kirby and Darren Crovitz. "We begin, instead, by teaching students to attend to their inner language, to their individual sensations, perceptions, emotions, incipient understandings, observations, and perspectives. Writing, like all other acts of creation, develops from the inside out."
In this highly practical guide filled with a wealth of activities for the classroom, Dawn and Darren continue the long-standing tradition of earlier editions of Inside Out with guidance for building a community of writers, providing innovative and effective strategies for meeting kids where they are and coaching them to write with passion and purpose across all genres. Readers will relish the somewhat irreverent tone that fans of earlier editions have come to expect. Dawn and Darren's updates and revisions in this edition speak directly to today's teacher, offering:
- new strategies and suggestions that incorporate technology in meaningful ways and speak to today's tech natives in terms they understand
- guidance for working with English language learners and their writing
- inventive, reality-based approaches to research
- options for using nonfiction and nontraditional texts in your teaching
- a fresh take on the importance of authentic literacy education, especially in the age of the high-stakes testing and the Common Core
- real-world wisdom and strategies for teaching writing from a team of middle and high school teachers.
From theory to practice, this comprehensive text has everything you'll need to engage your students and get them writing from the inside out.

This Book Can Save Your Life
By New Teacher
This book is a legend in the world of English teachers. The earlier editions were required texts in some of my English Education classes. When Heinemann announced this new fourth edition, I knew I had to have it.
If you have ever taught writing to middle or high school students, you know what it is to craft a writing project, give directions, teach prewriting, supervise the first drafts, and lead your students through an arduous revision process, only to have them turn in papers that bear almost no resemblance to what you had in mind. Even worse is when many of your students don't do the work, and you must balance your angst over your teaching methods with your secret relief at only having to grade 70 lackadaisical papers instead of 150.
There is a better way. Actually, there are many better ways, and this book will introduce you to most of them. Kirby and Crovitz say again and again that students must be fluent writers before they can learn grammar or mechanics. They suggest letting students begin by writing about themselves. After all, every teenager is an expert in what she likes and does not like.
The book gives plenty of examples and models of how to do this. Then it takes the reader through a stepped process, so that students can grow from narrow, writer-centered narratives to longer, more mechanically polished writing with an outside audience in mind. Both authors are experienced public school teachers. They have no illusions about what teenagers will and will not do. Like any good teacher, they are adept at meeting students where they are. This book will show you how to create a student-centered writing unit that will still meet the standards for the state in which you teach.
This book can also save your life, at least, the part of your life where you are a compassionate and proactive teacher. We all flounder at times in the classroom. Our lesson plans don't work out, our students are apathetic or surly, our schedule is laid waste by seemingly indifferent administrators. You can use this book to build a unit, or you can flip through it for quick ideas you can turn into lesson plans. Those ideas can save you time and salvage a class that is bogged down or way off track.
The book's other great strength is its conversational tone. The reader feels that the authors are in the room with her, offering words of experience and an empathetic ear. It makes for easy reading, even when the ideas are complex. I know this book will follow me into any classroom I enter, now and in the future. If you are interested in process writing at all, this book is for you.

Inside Out, Fourth Edition
By SmugMarried
Too often books for teachers are bogged down with mind-numbing facts and figures, graphs and charts. Too often the authors haven't set foot in a classroom in ages. Too often the books end up on our bookshelves dusty and disused. Not this book. My original Inside Out (2004) is dog-eared and filled with post-it notes and multi-colored highlights. That book was my writing bible. This new edition is even better. How Dawn Kirby and Darren Crovitz managed to retain the easy-to-use format of the first one yet take it to the next level is amazing. This book is so user-friendly and jam-packed with ideas--whether you're looking for a last minute change of plans or a complete unit--it's all in here. The richness of the writing, its straightforward presentation and format, even its headings and font style make this book a must for any English/Language Arts teacher. Filled with great ideas, tried and true "recipes" for writing, student examples and so much more, teachers have all the ingredients for creating a classroom community of writers. As we teachers venture outside of our pre-Common Core comfort zone, this book serves as a security blanket with its real world strategies and authentic advice. Kirby and Crovitz love writing; they love teaching writing; they love teachers, and they love students. And it shows. They know what teachers want and what they need. Trust me: you may not even realize how much you need and want this book, but once you have it, you will love it.

At first, I was scared
By Loren C. Gruber
I was scared that the 4th edition of Inside Out would be worse than the third. The 4th edition is more accessible to today's students because of its conversational style.
My Secondary English and Middle School Language Arts students voted the 4th edition as their favorite of three textbooks we use.
They and I, however, wish that the new edition had retained "The J" because teachers still use journals; likewise, they wish that the new edition had retained "Poetry," for the same reason. Creative writing is still being taught K-12.
