Originally I was skeptical when they said the book was "lightly used." I had the same book many years ago and lost it. I wanted to replace it but didn't want to spend a lot of money on it. When I saw how inexpensive it was I took a chance. Even though I beleaved the prize indicated the condition. I was wrong. I was pleasantly surprized when I received the book in very good condition. I definitely take a chance again on a "lightly used" item.

I am an English teacher and purchased this book for a student who primarily speaks Mandarin Chinese to supplement his study of the text in class. I gave the book to him today. He glanced through it, looked confused, and told me that it is incomprehensible. Apparently, he says it reads as if someone had put the text of Macbeth into Google Translate. I have no knowledge of Chinese, so I am at a loss in terms of assessing this item myself, but this is a student whom I know would have found the text extremely helpful if it were written correctly.

Great Textbook

I used this book for my Psychology and the law class and I was very pleased. Most textbooks are dry and dull but this one keeps your interest and reads like an enjoyable book. Each chapter has a few real life stories incorporated to the particular lesson and presents the information in a clear and understandable way such that even if you weren't supplementing the book with a lecture, you would still be able to fully comprehend what is written.

Joseph Mallord William Turner was born in London in 1775. His father was a barber, and his mother came from a family of London butchers. “His speech was recognizably that of a Cockney, and his language was the language of the streets.” As his finest paintings show, his language was also the language of light. Turner’s landscapes—extraordinary studies in light, colour, and texture—caused an uproar during his lifetime and earned him a place as one of the greatest artists in history.

Displaying his artistic abilities as a young child, Turner entered the Royal Academy of Arts when he was just fourteen years old. A year later his paintings appeared in an important public exhibition, and he rapidly achieved prominence, becoming a Royal Academician in 1802 and Professor of Perspective at the Academy from 1807–1837. His private life, however, was less orderly. Never married, he spent much time living in taverns, where he was well known for his truculence and his stinginess with money.

Peter Ackroyd deftly follows Turner’s first loves of architecture, engraving, and watercolours, and the country houses, cathedrals, and landscapes of England. While his passion for Italy led him to oil painting, Turner’s love for London remained central to his heart and soul, and it was within sight of his beloved Thames that he died in 1851. His dying words were: “The sun is God.”

In the second volume of his Brief Lives series, which commenced with a biography of Chaucer, Ackroyd presents another major cultural figure, the English painter Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851). In straightforward fashion, Ackroyd outlines the career of this remarkable man, who progressed rapidly from his early years as a student at the Royal Academy to prominence as one of England's foremost painters, creating dramatic works in which he explored the glowing effects of light fused with air, water, fire and steam. Turner's paintings, which often approach abstraction, astounded and shocked his critics, causing some to say he was a madman, an assessment reinforced by his eccentric, irascible character. Ackroyd shows how the artist, who never married and lived all his life with his father —though he had secret liaisons and two illegitimate daughters—was obsessed with his art, but was also an astute businessman, opening his own gallery in London when he was only 29, cultivating prosperous patrons and speculating in land and houses, all the while turning out a multitude of dazzling oil paintings, watercolors and engravings. Turner emerges from the page as a short, rather plebian--looking fellow who eschewed religion and seems to have been born to work, travel, and stay free of the entanglements of love. Ackroyd indelibly portrays the tireless, self-possessed Turner avidly sketching and writing somewhat incoherent verse, a "Cockney visionary" fueled by the same romantic sensibility as Wordsworth and Coleridge yet possessing a good head for business and a cosmic appreciation for light, fire, water, and storms. Words About Visuals: A Biography

Peter Ackroyd is a fine writer and continues his Brief Lives Series with this insightful biography of one of England's greatest painters, J.M.W. Turner. But readers beware - this is a book about the artist's life and is not a book to examine the artist's works. But there are plentiful other resources for viewing the magnificent paintings of light that Turner created.

Ackroyd adroitly explores Turner's humble background, elaborating on how this most elegant gentleman of the canvas began as a Cockney lad with little formal education. When he was 14 he entered the Royal Academy and within a year's time he was exhibiting his work! Turner was a man of nature and his misty seascapes and landscapes of England have won him permanent status in the pantheon of great painters. He was fascinated by light and the effect that light has through mists and clouds, storms and tree filtered glades. He had a particular affinity for architecture and his early works are primarily in watercolor and etchings. His experience with oil painting opened with his introduction to Italy.

Ackroyd, with a zest for truthful telling, emphasizes that Turner's private life was spent in the taverns, fathering illegitimate children and maintaining a mistress. Apparently a miser, he was not the rarefied 'gentleman' his paintings would suggest.

This is a fine little biography, filled with the facts about the personal life of Turner and a bit lacking on his artistic influences, but as an adjunct to other volumes on his work, books that neglect to look at the man holding the brush, this succinct 'life' affords important insights. Succinct, engaging biography of a great artist

Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775 - 1851) was the foremost landscape painter of his generation, and early on he was recognized as such. Admitted to the Royal Academy of Art at a surprisingly young age, Turner had a significant impact upon his own generation, as well as the generations of artists to follow, including the Impressionists.

In "Turner," author Peter Ackroyd sketches a life of the artist that provides basic information about the man, his family, his career and his major works - short, straightforward and providing enough detailed information to provide some depth and understanding of the collection (including how the collection came to be at the Tate Britain).

The book, in fact, is one of Ackroyd's "brief lives." It is not exhaustive but then it is not meant to be. Instead, it is a chronological overview of its subject that gives an extended outline of his life and work. Other `brief lives" that Ackroyd has done include ones for Sir Isaac Newton and Geoffrey Chaucer. (Ackroyd knows how to do an exhaustive biography - just pick up his "Charles Dickens," published in 1990.)

Don't let the "brief life" description mislead. Ackroyd has done his homework. He pulls from letters, contemporary accounts, the writings of Turner admirer John Ruskin and others, and proceedings of the Royal Academy, among other sources.

In "Turner," Ackroyd presents an artist who produced an astonishing number of works over his lifetime, one who worked almost feverishly - much like Dickens later worked in literature and magazine publishing. Turner and Dickens seem to share another important characteristic - self-awareness of their place in their respective fields and how they wanted to be known after their deaths. And both men were producing significant and important work up to the times of their deaths.

It's a succinct, engaging biography of a great artist.

Too Brief

Peter Ackroyd's BRIEF LIVES:J M W TURNER has only one fault - it is too brief.
I enjoyed reading it very much and came to the end of the book far too quickly. Ackroyd provides a glimpse into the private life of Turner: his habits and faults - like his reputation for thrift and his lack of patience for anything but work and his dearest friends.
The illustrations are very good and revealing. The illustrated profile of Turner by John Ruskin is excellent and reveals as much as any words can.
Yes, this book is a good buy and a good read for the Turner aficionados like myself.

This is an excellent resource for librarians or other professionals who want to create a website using WordPress. Advantages and disadvantages of the different hosting options are discussed; there is a lot of technical instruction in the second section, and in the third section the author provide numerous examples of how libraries have used WordPress for their library websites.

"Palanisamy, a Harvard-trained physician who uses holistic methods, bases this fitness guide on the tenets of the popular paleo diet (fruits, vegetables, lean meats, healthy fats, etc.) but also incorporates the ancient Indian system of ayurveda. Presenting ayurveda as a framework for customizing the paleo diet to individual body types, he includes a quiz to help readers determine whether they need vata (movement energy), pitta (metabolic energy), or kapha (strength-providing force). This is an impressive work, and it is far more than a diet book. It is a guide to finding health, your unique path to health, that is much needed in a world full of health misinformation and lifestyle confusion. As an integrative preventive medicine specialist, I tend to be highly critical of health books written for the lay public. The Paleovedic Diet, however, is one I can enthusiastically recommend and I think it deserves special attention.

It is clear that, in assembling this robustly scientific book, Dr. Palanisamy made accuracy and efficacy his top priorities. He has taken an abundance of evidence and insight elucidating highly complex physiological relationships that often confuse even nutrition experts and condensed it into succinct and understandable recommendations. He clears up numerous popular misconceptions about Paleolithic nutrition and he doesn’t hesitate to confront controversy with science. It might be surprising to the reader that actual scientific evidence, much of it reviewed here, exists to guide one in areas dominated by opinion and misinformation such as gluten sensitivity, genetically modified organisms, pesticides, and nutritional and herbal supplements. Dr. Palanisamy is fully honest about where the science is uncertain or absent and offers sincere and helpful advice on how these areas can be best navigated, clearly indicating when this is based on his own experience with patients. I have confidence that this book was motivated by the author’s desire to identify and share certain “truths” about nutrition and health, a journey he began long ago in an effort to recover his own health. I have great respect for this rare kind of authorship born of benevolent intent and curiosity.

The Paleovedic Diet is much more than a diet book, however. Additional critical lifestyle elements such as sleep and chronobiology (circadian rhythms, etc.), stress, and exercise are well covered with equal concern to the scientific evidence. Dr. Palanisamy recognizes that while diet modifications alone are likely to produce a benefit, the simultaneous modification of these synergistic lifestyle variables can produce much more dramatic benefits. Furthermore, he recognizes that different people require different ways to health. These observations are undeniably supported by biomedical science, yet they have been most thoroughly and precisely developed by the science of Ayurveda, making the inclusion of Ayurvedic principles in this book highly relevant and naturally seamless. For readers that might be uneasy about the humoral-like basis of Ayurveda, be reassured that modern science has never contradicted this ancient system. But whereas modern science is profoundly deficient in relating the complex dynamics between health and individual ecology, Ayurveda excels. I anticipate that it may take biomedicine hundreds of years to detail the same relationships that are already eloquently identified by Ayurveda. If you want the benefits now, Ayurveda can guide you.

In summary, The Paleovedic Diet is an enjoyable read which assembles a plethora of relevant modern and ancient scientific insights with impressive scope and integrity, offering the reader a nicely comprehensive approach certain to effectively improve health.

Great nutritional information

Overall, give it a read. If you have never read a nutritional book before, this should be your first one. If you have read a lot, you will still learn something. I have read quite a lot of nutritional books over the years and I think this is my favorite. The chapter about super foods, how to buy, store and cook them to get the most of your food is worth the price of the book right there. If you are looking for a lot of recipes with detail and pictures, this isn't the book for you. While there are many great aspects to the nutritional information, there are things I would do differently: I wish the recipes would have had side notes as to the amount of omega 3 to 6 ratio, or the amount of protein, how many calories, what dosha they are good for. To have all the great information given without implementing it into the recipes was disappointing. Plus, going through and looking at the recipes I could see errors - the title of the recipe and the ingredients list didn't match up. I did make the egg muffins. Not very good and they took a lot more time to cook than the recipe indicated. I've grown very fond of Well Fed and NomNom spices in food. I will continue to try different recipes - mostly drawn to those that I have not tried those spice combinations before.

Excellent Book!

I would say this is one of Mr. Tracy's best books. I'm probably a bit biased with that statement since self-confidence is part of my work, and it is a facinating subject for me. I did wonder before I purchaced this, that since Mr. Tracy has many books and other programs, there would be a fair amout of recycled content. This did have mostly new material, and the revisited ideas seemed to be applied in a new way and brought to the reader at a different angle... so no worries there.

Excellent and encouraging!

My husband recommended this book because I've struggled over the years with low self-confidence and poor self-esteem. I resisted reading it for a while, thinking its approach sounded simple and formulaic--not intellectual enough to help or challenge me. From the opening words, however, I was compelled and inspired. The entire book maintains a strong drumbeat of action-oriented encouragement and advice.

Inspirational and wise, the book hits its stride by offering concrete, practical steps, as the subtitle promises, for "becoming unstoppable, irresistible and unafraid in every area of your life." Overstated? Perhaps a little. What I found, however, was enough inspiration plus "perspiration" in the book's action steps, virtues and values to make a measurable difference in my work life, personal relationships and overall achievements. I only wish I'd discovered this book when I was starting my career. But as Brian Tracy would say, it's never too late to grow, climb and make a difference.

Some say this is one of the author's best books. I've only looked at one other--the one on reinventing yourself. This book, by far, is the stronger choice. If you need a big boost of self-confidence, and long to learn the steps to acquire it, here's a great book to buy, study and keep. Great for sharing with others, too. Five-star rating!

I was surprised at how clear and useful this book was. Really helped me to get it together. Recommended. The self-confidence angle is a bit misleading or not so important, what it is really good for is getting clear on what you want and your plan to get it.

A Northern Iliad

Although most of us have heard of the Greek epics and, in particular, the Iliad and Odyssey (the two most renowned epics in the western world today), we have a great deal less familiarity with the literary tradition of the old Norse folk who inhabited the lands about the Baltic and North Atlantic in early medieval times. We've heard about the vikings, of course, coastal pirates and fighters who sprang from these folk, and about their wide-ranging adventures across dangerous and often unexplored seas. Yet we are not nearly so familiar with the Norse literary tradition which is, in some ways, as compelling and profound as the literature of the ancient Greeks which we so revere today.

The Norse saga tradition reflects stories handed down orally for generations which were finally committed to written form in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Among these works, Njal's Saga may well be the best. Like all sagas it is a prose epic (as opposed to the poetic form of the Odyssey and its kind), but with a unique rhythm and perspective which only the Norse folk had to offer. It's a somewhat bleak tale of several generations of Icelandic families whose men and women lived and feuded on the remote island of Iceland, itself only settled by expatriate Norwegian farmers and land holders from about 860 AD onward.

Here, in Njal's Saga, is a tale of hard men in a harsh land who push and pull at one another until the only recourse, in their grim pioneering culture, remains the blood-feud. And once unleashed, the blood-flow is literally unstoppable as noble heroes cut one another down until one of the most respected of all the Icelanders, the eponymous protagonist of this tale, is himself burned alive, along with most of his kinsmen, in one of the retaliatory raids which arise from the ongoing feuds. This despite the realization by the burners that what they are about to do will have grim and far reaching consequences. Yet they cannot pull back, for honor's sake, and must suffer the consequences they know they are unleashing by their actions when, at last, a vast well-spring of revenge and justice arises to overwhelm them in the aftermath of their grim deed.

In the end it is the wronged viking Kari who single-mindedly pursues and hunts each of the individual burners down, to the far corners of the earth, affording them no peace as he seeks re-payment for the loss of his wife and young son until even he is spent. This, like most sagas, is a tale of many strands and several generations and so it partakes of the literary conventions of its type -- conventions which make it a little harder on the modern reader than some would like. There are extensive character genealogies (of little interest to most of us today) and very limited descriptive text (something else some of us may miss).

There is also a decided lack of subjective points of view or of interior monologue. Indeed we never get inside any of the characters' heads and, as in Hemingway at his sharpest, must 'see' the characters for what they are based on what they do and say alone. The entire conceit of the sagas is that they are oral tales, reflecting only what people saw and remembered of the events recounted, and so they are written thus. But at their best, they are a keen, if slightly aged and clouded, lense through which we may observe the doings of real people who are driven, much as we are today, by the same needs for fame and fortune which infect the human soul in every generation. Insofar as these tales, and Njal's Saga in particular, are windows into these matters they are universal in their unraveling of human motivations. And they are great adventure besides.

Njal's Saga, especially, has it all including feuds and viking adventure and, in the end, a redeeming sense of human frailty as the need for reconciliation and forgiveness replaces the unyielding cry for justice under the eyes of heaven.

If you like the saga form, there are several good tales in this vein, that aim to reproduce the saga in a way that also works as a modern novel. I particularly like ERIC BRIGHTEYES by H. Rider Haggard; STYRBIORN THE STRONG by E. R. Eddison; THE GOLDEN WARRIOR by Hope Muntz (probably the best of the lot); and THE GREENLANDERS by Jane Smiley (a very fine offering as well). I've also done one of my own: THE KING OF VINLAND'S SAGA; but I will refrain from commenting on it since it is for the reader, not the writer, to judge.

Don't dismiss Cook's translation out of hand...

I recently became interested in Norse mythology, and after acquiring a number of books on the subject my interest spilled over into Norse, particularly Icelandic, sagas. I bought the hefty Penguin "The Sagas of Icelanders", and since all the reviewers for it lamented the exclusion (understandably, for space reasons) of Njal's Saga, I bought that separately, and I've just finished reading it.

I bought this translation, Cook's. There seemed to be two main choices, this or Magnus Magnusson's, and I noticed a few reviewers quite bluntly trashing Cook's translation, promoting Magnus's instead. I decided to start with Cook's anyway, figuring that, even if it was inferior to Magnusson's, I wouldn't know what I was missing, since I hadn't yet read Magusson's. Admittedly, I still haven't read Magnusson's translation, but I enjoyed Cook's translation very much and did not by any means think of it as lacking.

In fact, in Cook's notes on the translation presented in the book, he explains his motivation and justification for translating the saga the way he did, in a way that seems to anticipate the disfavor of his translation by loyal Magnusson fans:

"[This translation] differs from previous translations of Njal's Saga...in attempting to duplicate the sentence structure and spare vocabulary of the Icelandic text."

After giving a few examples of the stylistic eccentricities in which the saga was originally written and demonstrating how he attempted to reproduce them in his translation--even contrasting an excerpt of Magnusson's translation with his own--he goes on to say:

"It is hoped that the reader of this translation will accept--and even learn to enjoy--these and other efforts at fidelity, though they may seem strange at first. The intent has been to create a translation with the stylistic "feel" of the Icelandic original."

Clearly, Cook did not set out to create a dry, inferior translation; rather he set out to create a more stylistically faithful translation, even if it meant sacrificing some of the flare and drama to which we as modern readers are accustomed.

Regarding the story itself...what can one say? There is something immensely powerful about reading a piece of literature that was written over seven centuries ago and discovering that its author and the people about whom he wrote had many of the same thoughts, feelings, and problems that we do today. When a character responds emotionally to a situation, or feels frustrated because of a moral dilemma, we can still, despite the vast chasm of time separating us, so easily relate to him or her. Even the author's humor and wit are delightfully close to home. Stories such as Njal's Saga remind us that people from long ago and far away are just that: people. Just like us. In a popular culture that has a tendency to glorify the ephemeral, trendy Here and Now, it's a fact that's easy to forget.

Better than most modern novels

Njal's Saga is perhaps the single most important and best-known of the entire body of Icelandic saga literature. By turns a legal thriller, domestic drama, and violent revenge tragedy, Njal's Saga is far more complex and entertaining than most of the modern fiction that I've ever read.

Njal's Saga covers one of the most violent and tumultuous periods in European history in general and Norse history in particular. During Njal's long life the first Christian missionaries came to the island and, in 1000, the island voted to convert. Such a brief summation does no justice to the intense machinations involved and the often violent reactions of Icelanders and Christians alike.

But of even greater importance to Njal's story are the many feuds in which he became embroiled and which finally claimed his life. The overall arc of the stories is far too complex to be related here, but every victory that Njal achieves comes at a heavy cost of both money and blood. Throughout, the feuding, fighting, and legal episodes at the Althing are carefully recorded and uniformly exciting.

A word on the translation: Cook's translation of the saga has drawn a considerable amount of flak from fans of the more "contemporary" Magnusson translation, but such attacks are largely unfounded. Cook's aim in translating the saga was to accurately recreate the original Icelandic's terse, forthright, and completely unembellished style. Having read a number of other saga translations, I'd say this is a noble and, in this case, successful aim. This translation is exciting without catering to modern convention, something that speaks well for the power of the story regardless of translator.

My only word of warning about this book: don't put it down. If you're like me, you won't have a problem with this, but for casual readers the details of plot and the many, many characters will probably slip away should one take a casual approach to the Saga. That said, this book should draw you in and never once let go once you've begun.

Practical Tips for Decluttering Daily

I really enjoy all of Steve's books. His style of writing is very practical and easy to understand, and the steps he lays out in his books are easy to implement. This book was no different. He and Barrie clearly lay out a practical, easy way to declutter your house in just ten minutes a day by creating a decluttering habit. There are multiple tips for establishing this habit as part of your daily routine. The second half of the book talks about how to actually declutter different areas of the house, which is very helpful if you don't know where to start or you want some practical tips on how to declutter one area, like the kitchen.

I bought the book yesterday and implemented it right away. While I was cooking dinner, I cleaned out one cupboard.

Overall, this was an easy and great read. If you want practical ideas for getting rid of clutter, I would highly recommend this book.

The book you need but don't know you need!

I guess it depends where you live... declutter/unhoarding, I think they're the same thing and I'm raising my hand to admit I'm unfortunately a hoarder, much to my husband's distress! I can totally relate to most of the "8 Reasons Why You Haven't Decluttered", in particular point's 2, 3, 7 and 8. Eek, I never thought I'd actually relate to so many when I first opened the book...

My fave chapter is the one called "How to Cash-in with Your Clutter" because it makes me feel better knowing that I'm not losing money and that those items I've held onto for so long can be of use to someone else.

I love the conversational tone of the book and the way it's split into sections, making it easy to just jump straight to the areas you need to fix immediately, without having to wade through the entire book.

Barrie and SJ know their stuff!

Wow! Great title and book from the "Habit Guru" S.J. Scott and Barrie Davenport. If you have some clutter at your house like I do--you need this book, '10-Minute Declutter: The Stress-Free Habit For Simplifying Your Home'. In reading this book I found some real gems about taking care of some problem areas in my office with strategies that will make the job easily manageable in 10 minute increments. Scott and Davenport give clear and concise actionable strategies anyone can implement in short bursts of time. In this book, I learned that with daily decluttering habits, mindset and commitment any clutter can be tackled and order can be restored--here's an action plan to get it done! The authors cover 14 benefits of decluttering, why we hold on to our possessions, how to cash in on our clutter, how to form a decluttering habit in 8 steps, and creating rewards for your success, the best room to start in, 15 questions to ask as you declutter, such as 'Do I already own something similar?" Something I never thought about is covered very well in this book-How to Stage Your Declutter Habit--and supplies to buy to begin that will make you more effective. What I really love is the detail checklist for each room and how to tackle it, such as kitchens and maybe keeping your counters unclutter free zones, how to declutter the laundry room and sorting kids toys-that's a big one at our house. I'm going to start with their suggestion for the desk and using "zones" and digitizing important papers easily. Great book for anyone who has gathered a small amount of clutter all the way to the well-cluttered home. I highly recommend this new habit book from S.J Scott and Barrie Davenport to those who can't even begin to declutter but who long to make better use of their space.
