Practical Tips for Decluttering Daily

I really enjoy all of Steve's books. His style of writing is very practical and easy to understand, and the steps he lays out in his books are easy to implement. This book was no different. He and Barrie clearly lay out a practical, easy way to declutter your house in just ten minutes a day by creating a decluttering habit. There are multiple tips for establishing this habit as part of your daily routine. The second half of the book talks about how to actually declutter different areas of the house, which is very helpful if you don't know where to start or you want some practical tips on how to declutter one area, like the kitchen.

I bought the book yesterday and implemented it right away. While I was cooking dinner, I cleaned out one cupboard.

Overall, this was an easy and great read. If you want practical ideas for getting rid of clutter, I would highly recommend this book.

The book you need but don't know you need!

I guess it depends where you live... declutter/unhoarding, I think they're the same thing and I'm raising my hand to admit I'm unfortunately a hoarder, much to my husband's distress! I can totally relate to most of the "8 Reasons Why You Haven't Decluttered", in particular point's 2, 3, 7 and 8. Eek, I never thought I'd actually relate to so many when I first opened the book...

My fave chapter is the one called "How to Cash-in with Your Clutter" because it makes me feel better knowing that I'm not losing money and that those items I've held onto for so long can be of use to someone else.

I love the conversational tone of the book and the way it's split into sections, making it easy to just jump straight to the areas you need to fix immediately, without having to wade through the entire book.

Barrie and SJ know their stuff!

Wow! Great title and book from the "Habit Guru" S.J. Scott and Barrie Davenport. If you have some clutter at your house like I do--you need this book, '10-Minute Declutter: The Stress-Free Habit For Simplifying Your Home'. In reading this book I found some real gems about taking care of some problem areas in my office with strategies that will make the job easily manageable in 10 minute increments. Scott and Davenport give clear and concise actionable strategies anyone can implement in short bursts of time. In this book, I learned that with daily decluttering habits, mindset and commitment any clutter can be tackled and order can be restored--here's an action plan to get it done! The authors cover 14 benefits of decluttering, why we hold on to our possessions, how to cash in on our clutter, how to form a decluttering habit in 8 steps, and creating rewards for your success, the best room to start in, 15 questions to ask as you declutter, such as 'Do I already own something similar?" Something I never thought about is covered very well in this book-How to Stage Your Declutter Habit--and supplies to buy to begin that will make you more effective. What I really love is the detail checklist for each room and how to tackle it, such as kitchens and maybe keeping your counters unclutter free zones, how to declutter the laundry room and sorting kids toys-that's a big one at our house. I'm going to start with their suggestion for the desk and using "zones" and digitizing important papers easily. Great book for anyone who has gathered a small amount of clutter all the way to the well-cluttered home. I highly recommend this new habit book from S.J Scott and Barrie Davenport to those who can't even begin to declutter but who long to make better use of their space. Kindergarten-Grade 3AFollowing the format of their popular picture book about manners, It's a Spoon, Not a Shovel (Dial, 1995), the Buehners now take on behavioral issues. On each double-page spread, readers are given three choices, two of them obviously wrong and quite amusing, and must pick the proper behavior for the animal in question. Situations include promising to do something until a more attractive offer comes along; considering a lie to avoid punishment; wanting to cheat on a test; and being tempted to destroy or litter property. The language is filled with tongue-tripping alliteration and wit: "Run over Rudy's red rubber radio repeatedly." The large, bright illustrations, executed in oils and acrylics, sustain the text's humor. A group of fish are, literally, in school; a bat reads Wait Until Dark; Santa and his reindeer fly across the Arctic sky; and a fish has a packet of Gummy Worms. Children can search the illustrations for the letters of the correct answers and check their responses in the answer key. Many animals are also hidden in each picture. The Buehners (It's a Spoon, Not a Shovel! 1995, etc.) continue their mission to make learning decorum a giggle instead of a slap on the wrist. In page-long fables, animals such as Ollie the Octopus and Rateesh Rat get into situations that demand decisions, while multiple-choice quizzes allow readers to participate. When Ollie's mother calls him for dinner, should he obey her, or stay and play? When Rateesh is feeling lonely, will hoarding or sharing his cheese endear him to rodent playmates? The letter of the correct answer is hidden somewhere in the lush illustration accompanying every tale, and some of these are difficult to find; regardless, the answers are provided at the end of the book. The illustrations must be pored over; observant readers will discover an intrepid bee in every take and plenty of hidden silliness: sheep-shaped clouds, a gummy-worm fish snack, Santa departing from the North Pole. Most children will have no problem discerning correct behavior, and some adults may wince in recognition at the black-and-white approach to ethics: It's not right to lie about a child's age at restaurants where those under five eat free. Not for 4-year olds even though it says so!

I was really disappointed in this book when I received it. Based on what I'd read, it seemed like the right book to teach my 4-year-old son about saying you're sorry, admitting when you did something wrong, etc. The details section even says this book is good for kids 4-8. However, the lessons taught in this book deal with a far more sophisticaeted, responsible world than that of a 4-year-old. For example, one page deals with a bat who is supposed to stay home and take care of his baby sister while his mother goes out. His friends ask the bat to come outside and play and the bat has to decide whether to keep his promise to his mom and be responsible or go play. A totally inappropriate story for a 4-year old who should never responsible for another child. In addition, in a story about respect for others' property, one of the possible answers is "'Cool' means you never have to say you're hairy." This answer is NOT something my 4-year-old would ever understand and is just one example of answers which are confusing (and meaningless) to 4-year olds. I intend to return this book.

Great book!

I bought this for my 6 year old. It is a series of short paragraphs with a multiple choice section at the end of each one. The stories are cute and funny, and she really got into thinking about the "right thing to do". Each short story has a different moral-example-saying sorry, telling the truth, being responsible, not following the crowd etc..She also enjoyed looking for the hidden answer in the picture for each short story. A great book-with good examples on doing the right thing.

Marc isn't just great art he has the narrative chops

If Will Elder and Geof Darrow gave birth to a next generation underground artist with a fine art sensibility, then you might begin to describe the genius of Marc Bell. Primed by the stunning art of Hot Potatoes and prepped by Pure Pajamas, I still wasn't convinced that Marc could pull off a full length narrative. I was so wrong. At first I was a little concerned about the slightly stripped down art. I had grown used to the wonderfully complex art and type mix that made him so engaging, but once I started reading, I became a true believer. It's amazing consistency and great reading flow made for an unstoppable and thoroughly great experience. His sense of the real world mixed with surreal elements is as unique as reading Jim Woodring. I'm now re-reading Pure Pajamas and looking for my copy of Shrimpy and Paul just so I can keep capturing the feeling.

Waste of trees, waste of time, waste of money

I'm game for absurd and nonsensical, but not for boring. This is extremely boring. No story, no characters, no nothing. The weak drawings become totally tiresome after a few pages. This is a pathetic attempt at coolness which I didn't even finish. If you want to buy a book that you'll never read again, go ahead.

After reading this book, I started contributing more to charity

Peter Unger makes a detailed and compelling case for regarding widespread suffering in developing countries as equivalent to suffering in one's own neighborhood. After reading this book, there are few reasons left for sitting on one's hands in the face of this suffering.

Other readers claim that the book's arguments rest on poorly supported utilitarian premises. Although Dr. Unger does work from a utilitarian frame of reference, I believe the logic of his arguements stand alone and the same conclusions could be reached using a different ethical framework.

It is common for ethicists to construct elaborate theories that explain why the conventional wisdom and practices of society are morally correct. Dr. Unger's contrarian view is both controversial and important. I can imagine that some readers will find the position taken in this book difficult to accept because it makes us question the morally upstanding life that most of us assume we are living.

Although this book is intended for the academic philosopher, it deserves to be read by a much larger audience.

Ingenious and important defense of Peter Singer's pond case

I am morally obligated to jump into a pond to save a drowning child's life, even if that would ruin my expensive suit. Why, then, am I not morally obligated to send a check to Oxfam if that would save a child's life and cost the same amount of money? There are many differences between the pond case and the Oxfam case. Unger carefully examines these differences and argues that our obligations in the Oxfam case match our obligations in the pond case.

Importantly, Unger does not derive his conclusion from a controversial theory such as utilitarianism. Rather, he begins by considering (e.g.) the suggestion that the pond case and the Oxfam case differ in terms of one's physical proximity to the victim (i.e. the person in need of aid). He then considers multiple cases that differ *only* in terms of one's physical proximity to the victim, noting that one's moral obligations are not affected. He concludes that physical proximity to the victim is not morally relevant. He does this with a variety of the differences between the pond case and the Oxfam case.

Unger also considers differences between the pond case and the Oxfam case that *are* morally relevant, e.g. the relative certainty of being able to save the victim's life. He then asks (e.g.) whether we would be obligated to dive into the pond if we were unsure whether we would be able to save the child's life. Obviously the answer is "yes." Again, Unger does this with a variety of the differences between the pond case and the Oxfam case. He concludes that we have a moral obligation to send aid to the distant needy.

This book is an important, readable, and concise reply to those who claim that Peter Singer's pond case and the Oxfam case are not analogous.

Unger not necessarily Utilitarian

Contrary to a couple of previous reviews posted here, both favorable and unfavorable, Unger neither argues for nor presupposes Utilitarianism or consequentialism. Nor does he need to. It is true that his conclusions bear a superficial similarity to utilitarianism in being quite demanding, but he argues this on the basis of fairly fundamental intuitions that nearly all of us accept already. His strategy is such that ANY moral theory (whether deontological, consequentialist or other) must take a stance on which aspects of the hypotheticals he presents are morally relevant. If we are to avoid such implausible conclusions as that physical proximity or salience of others' needs are morally relevant factors, I think we cannot avoid his primary conclusion that nearly all of us act wrongly by not giving much more to certain charities than we currently do.
Anyone who knows enough about this book to have read this far ought to read and grapple with the arguments presented in this book. Some of the more radical positions he defends may in the end turn out to be wrong but I think they certainly cannot be dismissed out of hand. This book will prove to be valuable to anyone concerned with doing the right thing as well as to intellectuals interested in the place of moral intuitions in moral inquiry (and as Unger points out, the dangers of relying too heavily on certain of those intuitions).

This book is fantastic in all respects. It goes hand in hand with the book Mr. Cherry wrote to teach the paramedic class as well citing page numbers, and sources along the way. It helped me pass my paramedic class, earn certification as well as my state lisc. as a proud EMT-Paramedic.

After Paramedic school I had to take the National Registry test. I was super nervous about it. I bought this book. This is the ONLY book that I used to study. I didn't use anything else. I passed the first time with no problem. The questions in this book are very similar to the questions on the NR test. I love how it gives the explanation in the back. I definitely recommend this book~!

In this book, Dr. Thorne painstakingly explains what are the well-established science and what are the speculations behind the movie Interstellar.

The movie is very long, and contains a lot of things --- and in places it was a little bit puzzling. This book takes us back to the movie, and explains to us the many aspects of science that this movie touched on, including: the biology and geophysics behind the dooms-day scenario at the beginning of the movie, the astrophysics and gravitational physics of black holes, the science of planets, and the (very wild) scientific speculations on wormholes and quantum gravity.

I watched the movie together with a group of physicists and astronomers; afterwards, we had a lively debate about whether many details in the movie was really plausible, as Dr. Thorne had promised to us previously. After reading this book, I can see that Dr. Thorne had (of course!) realized most of the problems that we were debating. In places when astrophysics or planetary science were involved, Dr. Thorne provided the (sometimes very unlikely but nevertheless possible) scenarios that our difficulties might be resolved. In places involving speculations in fundamental gravitational and quantum physics, Dr. Thorne provided motivations from the frontiers of theoretical physics. It was great fun to read these details.

Finally, this book reveals the untold story in the movie: it all started from the detection of gravitational waves!!!

Those thinking the science in the movie is inaccurate really need to read this book!

The best thing about this movie, as far as I'm concerned, is that it was designed from the beginning to treat some of the most interesting effects of general relativity in an accurate manner, and to make these counterintuitive effects central to a compelling human story. That story may be unrealistic in many ways, as most interesting stories are, but everything that occurs in the movie is consistent with the laws of physics as far as we know them (the material at the end delves into very speculative issues, but it does so in ways that are inspired by serious work in quantum gravity).

The fact that the main features of the movie are scientifically realistic could come as quite a surprise to many viewers, and this book gives them the opportunity to take the next steps toward understanding this surprising and incredibly beautiful science.

The Science of Interstellar

The movie is very entertaining, and it left me curious to find out more about some of the scientific aspects. The movie was marketed as being based on "real science" - after watching the film, it's clear that it is not that simple. Some of the film (particularly the latter part of it) hinges on theories that have not been proven by any means; nor have they been disproven, so in some sense the film may be accurate to what some of our "best guesses" are when it comes to current science.

Kip Thorne, whose work on theoretical physics is featured in the film, authors this book. He elaborates on the science seen in the movie, and aims to increase the audience's understanding of the theories within. It's a well-written text that does a good job explaining things to an average reader. He includes a number of charts, diagrams, and illustrations which definitely helped me to understand some of the more difficult concepts.

I look forward to seeing the film again now that I have read the book; I think it will certainly allow my appreciation for the movie to grow.
