Though there was no single overarching dress reform movement, it reveals similarities among the arguments posed by diverse groups of reformers, including especially the equation of reform with an ideal image of improved health. Drawing on a variety of primary and secondary sources in the USA and Europe—including the popular press, advice books for women, allopathic and alternative medical literature, and books on aesthetics, art, health, and physical education—the text makes a significant contribution to costume studies, social history, and women’s studies.

I was more interested in seeing the fashion of the times. This is a detailed discussion/surveytextbook. Actually, tedious to read and not many illustrations. I am working on our family tree and wanted visuals.

Lots of Great Information

Reforming Women’s Fashion is a very well-researched book that discusses the viewpoints of both the individuals and groups involved in dress reform in Europe and America. The author goes into minute detail about their various efforts at reform and contains many wonderful illustrations of Bloomer-style and aesthetic dress. Though sometimes repetitive, the text is well-written and based primarily upon nineteenth-century documents. As an extra plus, it includes many illuminating quotes. It should be of great interest to anyone wanting to learn about the nineteenth-century dress reform movement.
